Welcome to the CRC, a unique and enjoyable learning experience utilizing 30 minute lecture sessions, interactive speaker panels that offer opportunities for posing questions, small group problem-based learning discussions, and new for this year, hands-on point of care ultrasound workshops.  In a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, you will meet several guest speakers from various fields in the UNC School of Medicine as well as our neighboring medical campus to the north, along with outstanding UNC Anesthesiology faculty.

Audience:  This course is designed for physicians, including but not limited to anesthesiologists, critical care specialists, pain specialists, surgeons, and internists, as well as certified registered nurse anesthetists, anesthesiology residents and fellow physicians, certified anesthesiologist assistants, and allied services practitioners.

Course Credit:  Physicians - UNC CME Office designates this educational activity for a maximum of 21.0 AMA PRA Category I Credit(s).  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with their participation in the activity.

CRNAs - This program has been approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists for a maximum of 21.0 Class A CE Credits; Code Number XXXXXXX; Expiration Date 06/23/2018.  CRNAs should only claim credit commensurate with their participation in the activity.

Course Objectives:

• Distinguish between pediatric patients and their co-morbidities to determine which can be scheduled for an ambulatory center surgical procedure
• Define delirium in the acute setting and distinguish symptoms of new onset delirium from other more chronic co-morbidities like dementia. 
• Review signs and symptoms of PDPH and discuss when futher workup needs to be carried out and when conservative therapy may not be adequate
• Recognize what types of orthopedic trauma are emergencies and describe the surgical decision-making of what cases must proceed emergently to the operating room versus those that can be managed conservatively for a time.
• Review common acquired coagulation defects and distinguish what factors are altered in each case, indicating the treatment options for each defect.
• Define diastolic heart failure, contrast it with systolic failure, and review treatment methods that are appropriate for the peri-operative setting to improve outcomes in patients that are not optimzied prior to surgery
• Evaluate safety mechanisms in the peri-operative setting for various anesthetic drugs and discuss what steps can be taken to decrease the likelihood of medication errors.

Ultrasound Point of Care Workshops:  Workshops are limited to a total of 16 physicians participants daily, 4 attendees per instructor.  Workshop charge is $225 for all three sessions.
