Title: Commercializing Academic Research: Personal Experiences and Opinions
Speaker: Professor J. Michael Ramsey, Minnie N. Goldby Distinguished Professor of Chemistry Chair at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

In addition to his appointment at UNC-CH, Professor Ramsey is the scientific founder of Caliper Technologies, a company that commercialized microfluidic biological assay technology developed in his laboratory.  The company was started in 1994, capitalized with venture funding in 1995, and became publically traded in 1999.  The companies name changed to Caliper Life Sciences in 2003 and was acquired by PerkinElmer in 2011.  Prof. Ramsey more recently cofounded 908 Devices Inc., where he is a director and the scientific founder.  908 Devices is commercializing miniaturized mass spectrometry technology developed in his laboratories.  Dr. Ramsey will discuss his experiences from these commercialization efforts.
