Purpose: This workshop will offer participants the opportunity to learn about patterning structures across different length scales (nm → µm) and become familiar with a number of important application areas – microfluidics and nanofluidics for biological/biomedical applications.  There will be lectures covering relevant technological and application areas with on-site visits and demonstrations of relevant equipment. The last day of the workshop will involve a hands-on
experience; making a microfluidic device.

Intended Audience: Researchers wanting to learn more about what microfluidics can do, how to design devices for different application areas, and how to make microfluidic devices.

Venue: Lectures - 125 Chapman Hall, Hands-on Laboratory - Chapel Hill Analytical and Nanofabrication Laboratory (CHANL), Chapman Hall www.chanl.unc.edu

Cost: Lectures (Days 1 and 2)  - $100 per day or $175 for both days; Hands-on laboratory - $150 (can sign up for either lecture day or both. The hands-on laboratory is optional and limited to 20 people).

Lectures – (Day 1) Basic principles on how to produce microstructures and nanostructures in a variety of materials. (Day 2) Various biomedical applications of both microfluidics and nanofluidics.

Lecturers – Steven A. Soper, Carrie Donley, Bob Geil, Maggie Witek and Matt Hupert (UNC); Michael Murphy, and Sunggook Park (Louisiana State University)
