The Zollicoffer Committee presents "Raising Bertie." Raising Bertie is a documentary that intimately follows three African-American protagonists as they face a precarious coming of age in rural Bertie County, North Carolina. Like many rural areas, Bertie County struggles with a dwindling economy, a declining population, and a high school graduation rate below the state average. This powerful vérité film weaves the young men's narratives together as they work to define their identities and grow into adulthood while navigating complex relationships, institutional racism, violence, poverty, and educational inequity. With UNC School of Medicine's renewed commitment to recruiting, training and graduating the new community of  North Carolina's rural physicians, the Zollicoffer Committee wanted to bring attention to the many political, socioeconomic and sensitive issues that these rural communities face in order to meaningful discuss and investigate solutions to improve the overall health of these communities. 

It is our pleasure to invite UNC School of Medicine faculty, administrators, staff, students as well as the larger UNC community to participate in our night of discussion and fellowship.  Refreshments will be served, followed by screening of the "Raising Bertie" documentary and discussion led by Dr. Zollicoffer. Admission is free.  Guests are welcomed. 

This event will be Friday, February 23rd, 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Medical Biomolecular Research Building (MBRB) 2204.  Please register by Friday, February 15th 2018.
