This hands-on course will focus on how to best use the tools in ATLAS.ti 7 to make sense of your qualitative data, including interviews, focus groups, survey responses, and documents. Coding and memo writing are presented as simultaneous tasks that occur during an ongoing, active review of data.

In addition to presenting features in ATLAS.ti, we will also discuss deductive and inductive codes and the process of codebook evolution, that is, how codes emerge and perhaps change as you move deeper into analysis. Memos are presented as notes aimed to capture reactions while reviewing data as well as more involved reflections that resemble early writing for reports, articles, and dissertation chapters. These critical notes can include project description memos, data reflection memos, and thematic memos. Both codes and memos are discussed in the context of a research process that begins with data collection and moves toward final presentation and products.

We will highlight the features in the PC version of ATLAS.ti 7 that can help you assess what you are learning and introduce critical reflection of your strategies for analysis. Our emphasis will favor a dynamic exploration of data.  We will look at basic tools for reviewing quotations, codes, and memos.  Co-occurrence and querying tools will be featured as possible ways to contemplate relationships among and between codes. Finally, diagramming tools in the software will allow for exploration of codes and other ideas that emerge throughout your work and for presentation of key connections you unearth.

Participants are asked to bring, if possible, at least one document to the session, but data will also be provided by the instructor for hands-on exercises.
