Socioeconomic status (SES) is a fundamental contributor to health and disease across the life course, but its implications for sexual and gender minority health are not well-studied - largely due to data limitations.

In this presentation, Dr. Carolyn Halpern will describe an ongoing project that will collect new national data about formative experiences specific to sexual orientation and behavior, as well as gender development and expression for individuals who have been followed for more than 20 years. We will also enhance existing prospective information about SES and determinants of SES among sexual and gender minorities and cisgender heterosexuals.

Dr. Halpern is professor and chair of the Department of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. She has nearly 30 years of research experience in the study of adolescent and young adult sexuality and risk-taking in both U.S. and global settings, and more than 100 peer-reviewed publications on these topics. She has received multiple university-wide and national awards for mentoring and academic leadership.
