You’ve got your article, blog, or website ready to post. But will anyone see it after you publish? This workshop will be an introduction to using search engine data to expand the reach of your online science writing and communication. You’ll learn the basics of a core search engine optimization skill: keyword research. With this skill, you will be able to find out what language the public uses when they search Google and other search engines for science questions.  We’ll look at an example of why we need to use that language in our writing to signal to Google and other search engines to return our articles and websites when the public does these searches. We will also go over basic definitions and terms of other key SEO skills in on-page keyword use and hyperlinking, why these skills are so important to science writing and communication, and where to learn more.

This workshop will be run by Dr. Effie Greathouse. Dr. Greathouse holds a B.S. in wildlife, fish, and conservation biology from the University of California, Davis and a Ph.D. in ecology from the University of Georgia.  She is currently the director of Digital Resources for Community and Science where she specializes in comprehensive search and social media approaches to long-standing science communication challenges.
