JOIN US as we showcase the outstanding research discoveries of our diverse students.  This symposium will offer a unique platform to share research findings, exchange ideas and facilitate connections within UNC?CH and other North Carolina peer institutions.  The goal of this symposium is to celebrate the research achievements and further the careers of underrepresented students in the sciences.  The schedule includes oral presentations, poster presentations, our keynote address, as well as lunch and coffee breaks with time for networking opportunities.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Jerrel Yakel, Senior Investigator in the Laboratory of Neurobiology at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, will deliver our keynote address.  Dr. Yakel’s research investigates environmental effects that regulate electrical activity and intercellular communication between nerve cells in the brain.  Specifically, he studies acetylcholine receptors in the hippocampus as therapeutic targets in the treatment of diseases/disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy and schizophrenia.  He is part Luiseno and La Hoya (Native American) and hails from Ventura County, CA.
