AOWS8: Not your Grandfathers’ Wars: Teaching WWI & WWII to 21st Century Learners

Twenty-first century students are bombarded with media and technology on a daily basis. As teachers, how can we tap into this stream of information and create engaging and analytical lessons? This course will explore some of the best resources available for learning and teaching about WWI & WWII and provide teachers with the opportunity to create and share ideas for classroom instruction. Emphasis will be placed on global perspectives, historical thinking/lifelong learner skills, essential questions, primary source materials, and concept-based lessons that meet national and state standards.

Topics will include: Lest We Forget: Why WWI Still Matters; Beyond ‘Call of Duty’: Instructional Games and Simulations for WWI & WWII; and Soldier Stories: Primary Sources for Teaching the Realities of War.

*Course start date subject to change pending minimum enrollment.

Please contact LEARN NC Executive Director, Andy Mink (mink@unc.edu) for special individual and/or school package pricing.
