Combatting Opioid Addiction and Overdose:  Advancing Science and Policy (formerly: Symposium for Multi-Disciplinary Research in the Opioid Crisis)

The nation is facing an unprecedented epidemic of prescription and non-prescription opioid overdose. Solutions to this crisis will require multidisciplinary teams of researchers from across our campus, at other universities and research partner organizations, to work together. Join us Thursday, May 25th for a cross-disciplinary symposium to discuss and examine the different ways to tackle the opioid crisis in the state and nation.

The day will begin with sponsor agency representatives providing an overview of funding opportunities. Attendees will then divide into two tracks.  In track #1, investigators will work in interdisciplinary teams to develop pre-proposals in some of the following areas: the importance of data; community driven approaches to the problem; pre-clinical and clinical research, and the connection between HIV and the crisis. In track #2, the audience will learn about issues related to the opioid crisis, including ongoing efforts in North Carolina for prevention, advocacy, and treatment; about transitions from opioid addiction to other health problems; and the biological, clinical, etiological, social, and policy-related aspects of the problem.

DATE:  Thursday, May 25th; TIME:  8:30 am - 1:00 pm

LOCATION: UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield Auditorium
