Mentorship of the STEM Double Minority Symposium Return to listing

UNC's Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) welcomes computer scientist, Dr. Jaleh Rezaie to kick off the first of two Mentorship of the STEM Double Minority Symposium seminars. Dr. Rezaie is the Associate Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies for North Carolina Central University (NCCU). Dr. Rezaie's research interests in STEM and computer science education have led her to speak at numerous events highlighting the importance of supporting minority girls interested in STEM fields. Dr. Rezaie will discuss the causes/effects of disproportionate numbers of minority women in STEM graduate programs and upper level positions; how we, as graduate students and faculty members, can change our mentoring strategies to help alter this reality, and how the changes would benefit us, as mentors, as well as our mentees.

The second symposium seminar will feature electrical engineer, Dr. Ruthie Lyle, who will continue the discussion regarding our responsibility to support minority girls and women as they pursue careers in STEM. Holding 136 issued patents within her tenure at IBM, Dr. Lyle is among the first African American technologists to achieve the distinction of IBM Master Inventor. Dr. Lyle currently works with USAA Research and Devlopment as a Lead Research Engineer and is involved in mentorship programs within the Research Triangle that foster supportive environments for minority girls interested in STEM fields.

Co-sponsors for this event include Initiative for Minority Excellence (IME), Women in Science (WinS), UNC's Association of Chemistry Graduate Students (ACGS) and Materials Research Science (MRS).
