“Creating a Welcoming Space for LGBTQ+ Patients and Families”

by JoAn Stanek DNP, RN, ANP-BC (she/her/hers)

Dr. Stanek has been an Assistant Professor at UNC-CH School of Nursing since 2006 and a Registered Nurse since 1984. To remain current in practice, JoAn has worked as a per diem staff nurse for the past 7 years in hospice and palliative care.

This presentation examines the need to provide a safe and welcoming space to LGBTQ+ persons and families at end of life. It discusses the necessity to promote a respectful environment and the importance that hospice and palliative care healthcare providers be educated in the use of inclusive language to provide a welcoming space. The presentation is a result of Dr. Stanek’s DNP Quality Improvement project
