This workshop provides participants/teachers with research-based strategies for promoting students' motivation and engagement in learning in the context of classroom instruction. The first part of the workshop will focus largely on problems with how old ideas still play out in classrooms today (e.g., through sticker charts or card charts). Dr. Holland will also discuss a more modern understanding of motivation called self-determination theory and will explore some of its practical applications--especially for classroom management, particularly improving student engagement and decreasing teacher stress. The second part of the workshop will address such topics as tattling, bathroom time, lining up, aligning with PBIS, persistent misbehavior, and behavior plans. Participants also will have time and opportunities to raise and discuss issues. Additionally, Dr. Holland will talk about achievement goal theory and its implications for pedagogy, as well as for administrators in building a culture of continuous improvement among staff.
Please note: previously Dr. Holland has offered a professional development sequence that included this workshop plus ongoing technical assistance, either by phone or in person. In order to meet the demand for the workshop, at this time the workshop only is being offered (without follow-up conference calls or visits by Dr. Holland).
